OK Yorkie Rescue: Breeders and Rescues Can work together

February 23rd, 2010

So, when a breeder decides to downsize or stop, what are they to do?  Some of their options include taking them to an auction where they are usually purchased by another breeder, euthanize them, or give them to a shelter.

One breeder was put in contact with OKYR several weeks ago and was looking to downsize her program but specifically wanted to have her dogs placed in rescues that use foster homes while looking for adoptive families.  When OKYR received the information about her wanting to surrender two Yorkies, we hit the road to get them, no questions asked.

A week or two later, we received an email from our breeder friend and found that she was having trouble finding rescues that were willing to take her babies or would only take them with very specific conditions placed on her.  We decided to see if we could use our rescue contacts to help.

After many phone calls, it seems we were running into the same issues our breeder friend was having.  Most of the rescues only wanted certain dogs or wanted to place conditions on the breeder.  However, three of our rescue friends jumped in to help!  The Because of You Chihuahua Rescue, Pet Adoption League of Tulsa, and Schnauzer Rescue of North Texas were all willing to place some of the dogs in their foster homes and find them forever homes.

We pulled 14 dogs from the breeders place and they are now placed in foster homes and preparing for their spay/neuters to get ready for their forever homes.  It is amazing what can be accomplished when breeders and rescues work together!  Fourteen babies will find themselves living in wonderful family homes for the rest of their lives.  There is no “I” in Team!!
